Is HelloTalk Safe for Kids? What the Terms Actually Say (2026)

Under 18 needs ||{a guardian}.

Parents searching “is HelloTalk safe” are almost always asking one of three versions of the same question. Can my child use it? What are the rules for under-18s? And is there something safer that does the same job?

Here is the honest answer, based on HelloTalk’s own published terms. HelloTalk does have protections for minors, and it does not pretend to be a children’s product. Its terms state that anyone under 18 may use the service only with a parent or guardian’s approval. Whether that’s the right fit for your child depends on what you actually want them to get out of it.

What HelloTalk’s own rules say

A teenage girl and her mother looking at a smartphone screen together on a sofa
For an app that connects your child with strangers, the setup conversation matters more than the app.

We went to the source rather than repeating what other blogs say. Two things are stated officially:

  • Parental approval for under-18s. The terms of service say: “If you are under 18 years old, you may use the Service, with or without registering, only with the approval of your parent or guardian.”
  • Minors are matched only with minors. HelloTalk’s help pages state that users under 18 can only search for other minors, and that this restriction also covers Moments, comments, livestreams and Voiceroom. The stated reason is the safety of members.

One thing we could not find: a clearly stated absolute minimum age in the terms themselves. If that number matters for your decision, ask HelloTalk directly rather than trusting a third-party summary — including this one.

So: this is not an app with no safeguards. Credit where it’s due. It is, however, an app built for adult language exchange that has added protections for younger users — which is a different thing from a service designed for children from the start.

The thing to weigh isn’t only safety

Most parent guides stop at “is it safe?”. We think there’s a second question that matters just as much: will it actually work for a child?

Language exchange is built on a specific bargain: you help me with my language, I help you with yours. That bargain works beautifully between two motivated adults. For a child it tends to break down, for reasons that have nothing to do with safety:

    • Nobody is expecting them next week. A conversation partner who drifts away is normal on an exchange app. For a child, that’s the end of the habit.
    • There is no plan. Chats go wherever they go. Nothing accumulates in a deliberate order.
    • Nobody is responsible for their progress. A language partner is a peer doing a favour, not a teacher who noticed your child went quiet for three weeks.
    • Talking to strangers is work. Many children — especially the shy ones who most need speaking practice — simply won’t start the conversation.

    What TOMODACHI JAPAN does

TOMODACHI JAPAN is an online Japanese school for children growing up outside Japan — built for children from the first line of the design, not adapted for them afterwards.

    • The same faces every week. A class of 8 and a homeroom teacher. Your child isn’t starting a conversation with a stranger — they’re going back to people who know them.
    • Teachers who work in Japanese schools. Adults whose job is your child’s progress, not peers doing a favour.
    • Same-age friends in Japan. The pull isn’t a streak or a badge. It’s that someone is waiting.
    • Live lessons on a fixed schedule. Something that lands in the week, rather than something to remember to open.

If your teenager is already using HelloTalk happily and safely, there is no reason to take it away. For a younger or shyer child, a class where the same people show up each week is usually the thing that actually gets them talking.

    Frequently asked questions

Is HelloTalk safe for a 13-year-old?

HelloTalk’s terms require a parent or guardian’s approval for anyone under 18, and its help pages state that minors are matched only with other minors. Those are real protections. Whether it suits your particular child is a judgement only you can make — and worth revisiting as they get older.

    What’s the minimum age?

We could not find an absolute minimum age stated in HelloTalk’s terms of service. What is stated is the parental-approval requirement for under-18s. If the exact number matters to you, ask HelloTalk.

My child is too shy to message strangers. What then?

That’s extremely common, and it isn’t something to fix by pushing. Shy children usually start speaking in a setting where the same people are there every time and where listening quietly is allowed at first.

    In short

    • HelloTalk’s terms require a parent or guardian’s approval for anyone under 18
    • Officially, minors are matched only with other minors, across search, Moments, comments, livestreams and Voiceroom
    • We could not find an absolute minimum age in the terms — ask them directly if it matters
    • The bigger question for a child isn’t only safety, it’s continuity: is anyone expecting them next week?
    • For a shy or younger child, the same classmates every week beats new strangers
