Teacher’s note: Tanjiro’s habit of encouraging himself out loud is one of the most quoted moments in modern anime — and it’s built from real, useful Japanese. 頑張れ (ganbare) is the command form of 頑張る (ganbaru), “to do one’s best.” You’ll hear it constantly in Japan, cheering on friends, athletes, and yourself (we cover its full range in “ganbatte / ganbare meaning”). The pattern やってきた (yatte kita), “have been doing / did up to now,” and もっと〜できる (motto ~ dekiru), “can do more,” are both everyday gold.

Teacher’s note: This thunderous line from Giyu Tomioka is a vocabulary lesson in itself. 生殺与奪 (seisatsu-yodatsu) is a four-character compound (四字熟語, yojijukugo) literally stacking “life · kill · give · take away” — i.e. total power over whether someone lives or dies. 権 (ken) = “right/authority,” 他人 (tanin) = “other people,” and 握らせるな is the causative 握らせる (“let [someone] grip”) plus the blunt command な (“don’t”). It’s magnificent on screen and completely over-the-top in daily life — but 他人 (tanin) and the idea of 権 (ken), “a right,” are genuinely useful words to walk away with.

Teacher’s note: Rengoku’s 心を燃やせ (kokoro o moyase) uses the command form of 燃やす (moyasu), “to burn/ignite” — poetic and inspiring, but as a plain command it’s dramatic; a gentle “let’s” version would be 心を燃やそう. The idiom 胸を張る (mune o haru), “to puff out your chest,” genuinely means “to be proud / stand tall,” and it’s real, usable Japanese: 胸を張って言える (“I can say it with pride”). One note for learners: 弱き (yowaki) is an old, literary form of 弱い (yowai), “weak” — beautiful in a speech, but in normal conversation you’d just say 弱い人.
Demon Slayer Japanese vs. everyday Japanese
Demon Slayer‘s writers deliberately reach for grand, slightly old-fashioned Japanese — four-character compounds, archaic forms like 弱き, and dramatic command forms — because it makes the Taishō-era world feel weighty and heroic. That’s wonderful for building your reading vocabulary and your ear for beautiful Japanese. Just don’t mistake it for how people chat today. The move, as always: keep the great words (頑張る, 胸を張る, 他人), and swap the blunt command forms for polite everyday speech. A native teacher can show you the difference in seconds — and it sticks, because it’s attached to a scene you already love.
