Japanese Saturday school options in Perth

If you are raising a Japanese-Australian child in Perth, you have probably typed “Japanese Saturday school Perth” into your phone and been slightly confused by the results. The names sound almost identical — weekend school, language school, hoshuko, community language school — but they do very different jobs. Here is the short answer up front: a weekend hoshuko in Perth gives your child one grade-level session a week to keep pace with Japan; the WACE Japanese route is about earning a recognised senior-school credential; and private or community classes keep conversational Japanese fun and alive. Most Perth families end up needing more than one of these — and that is exactly the gap a daily online option fills. Below is an honest comparison of every real Japanese Saturday school in Perth, plus what nobody tells you until you enrol.

Three types of weekend Japanese school — and why the difference matters

The single most common mistake Perth families make is assuming these schools are interchangeable. They are not. A hoshuko is trying to keep your child at Japanese national grade level. A community language school is trying to build practical, enjoyable Japanese. A WACE-focused class is trying to earn ATAR marks. Choosing the wrong one for your goal wastes years, so it helps to see the three types side by side before you enrol.

Hoshuko: keeping pace with grade level in Japan

The Weekend Japanese School in Perth (パース補習授業校) in City Beach is Perth’s supplementary Saturday school, running since 2005 for children from kindergarten through Year 12. Its job is kokugo — teaching the Japanese national curriculum in Japanese, at grade level, the same way a school in Japan would. For a family who may return to Japan, or who wants their child reading and writing at their true age level, this is the gold standard. It is also demanding: it assumes a certain baseline of Japanese, moves at Japanese pace, and asks for real homework alongside the child’s Australian school week. The school also runs an ATAR Background course for senior students. Tuition is quoted on enquiry.

    The WACE Japanese route

If your goal is a senior-school credential and ATAR marks, the pathway runs through WACE Japanese, administered by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). There are two courses: Japanese: Second Language (for students who learnt Japanese mainly in the Australian classroom) and Japanese: Background Language (for students with more established home proficiency). Which one your child is eligible for is decided by SCSA on a case-by-case basis, via an application submitted in Year 10. In Western Australia these courses can be studied through a range of providers, including the School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) for students whose own school does not offer Japanese. Private and small-group tutors — such as Perth Japanese School in the CBD — commonly coach students through this route. The key thing to understand: the WACE route rewards literacy, not just conversation.

    A note on immersion / full-time

Perth also has the Japanese School in Perth (パース日本人学校), a full-time day school following the Japanese curriculum. This is a genuinely different category — it is your child’s main school, not a Saturday supplement, and it suits families on shorter postings who plan to return to the Japanese system. Most heritage families in Perth are looking to add Japanese alongside mainstream Australian schooling, so full-time immersion usually is not the question they are actually asking. We mention it only so you do not confuse it with the weekend options above.

Three Perth-specific things to plan around

    • WACE Japanese eligibility is decided early — and demands real literacy. Whether your child sits Second Language or Background Language is determined by SCSA through a Year 10 application, and both courses require kanji, reading and composition. A child who speaks fluent Japanese at home but has never been drilled in writing can be caught out: spoken-only heritage Japanese will not carry a WACE course on its own. Build the reading and writing years before Year 11, not the term before.
    • One session a week is a hard ceiling. A Saturday hoshuko or community class gives your child one contact session per week — often two or three hours. That is wonderful, but it is not enough exposure on its own to keep a heritage child’s Japanese growing, especially once English becomes their dominant language at school. What happens on the other six days matters more than the one.
    • Perth is geographically isolated. Perth is one of the most remote capital cities in the world, and the number of Japanese providers reflects that — there are fewer options than in Sydney or Melbourne, classes fill quickly, and if you live outside the western suburbs the Saturday commute to City Beach or the CBD is real. Plan enrolment early and factor the drive into your week.

The online option: turning once-a-week into every day

This is where an online school changes the maths. Instead of one Saturday session, your child can join Japanese lessons on a weeknight, from home, as often as they like — the same idea we cover in our guide to the online alternative to Japanese hoshuko. For Perth specifically, the timing works out remarkably well.

    • The time difference is a big win for Perth. Perth (AWST) is just one hour behind Japan (JST), and Western Australia does not observe daylight saving — so that one-hour gap holds all year round, never drifting to three hours the way eastern Australia does in summer. Japan’s late-afternoon classes land in the Perth late afternoon and early evening: right after school, from your own living room, with no Saturday-morning commute across town. Perth is genuinely one of the most time-compatible cities in the world for a Japan-based online school.
    • The other kids actually live in Japan. TOMODACHI JAPAN runs on NIJIN Academy, with 800+ students, so your child is not practising with a class in Perth — they are making real friends their own age in Japan and using Japanese for the reason that keeps any language alive: to talk to people they like.
    • Unlimited attendance, one flat fee. One flat monthly fee for as many sessions as your child wants, grouped by conversation level rather than school grade, taught by qualified, practising Japanese teachers. No per-hour maths, no Saturday-only ceiling.

One Saturday class keeps Japanese ticking over. Five weeknights of friends in Japan keep it growing.

    FAQ from Perth families

My child speaks Japanese at home but can barely write. Will that be enough for WACE Japanese?

Honestly, no — not on its own. Both WACE Japanese courses (Second Language and Background Language) test kanji, reading and written composition, and eligibility for either is decided by SCSA through an application in Year 10. Spoken fluency is a huge head start, but it will not carry the written parts of the exam. If ATAR Japanese is on your horizon, start building reading and writing well before Year 11 — a weekly hoshuko session plus regular literacy practice at home or online is the combination that works.

Is the time difference to Japan a problem for online lessons from Perth?

It is actually one of the best in the world. Perth is only one hour behind Japan and Western Australia has no daylight saving, so the gap never grows. A class that runs in the late afternoon in Japan lands in the late afternoon or early evening in Perth — perfect for straight after school. Families in Sydney or Melbourne have to deal with a shifting two-to-three-hour gap in summer; Perth families do not. If anything, your location makes a Japan-based online school easier, not harder.

Can we do both a Saturday hoshuko and online lessons?

Yes, and many families find that the strongest combination. The Saturday hoshuko keeps your child anchored to Japanese grade level and the national curriculum; the online lessons add the everyday conversation, friendship and exposure that one session a week simply cannot provide. They target different things, so they complement rather than compete.

My child is shy and worried about speaking. Does online really help?

Often more than a classroom does. Groups are small and organised by conversation level, not school grade, so your child is never the odd one out, and being at home from the first lesson removes a lot of the fear. Because the other children live in Japan and share the same interests, conversation has a real reason to happen — which is usually what finally gets a quiet child talking.
