Final Fantasy Japanese Names: 9 Heroes and the Spell System

Final Fantasy Japanese names - the spell ladder and nine heroes in katakana

Most players assume Cura and Curaga are made-up English. They are not English at all. In Japanese the spell is ケアル, and the stronger versions are ケアルラ and ケアルガ — the same word with a Japanese syllable stuck on the end, exactly the way a Japanese speaker builds up any other word. I am a Japanese teacher, and here are the Final Fantasy Japanese names — the spell ladder, the nine FFVII heroes in katakana, and the two mascots whose names are puns you cannot see in English.

Can-you-use-it legend: ◎ = real Japanese, safe to use · △ = real word, but game-flavoured · ✗ = invented for the game only.

The spell ladder: ラ and ガ, not Latin

English players learn the tiers as Cure → Cura → Curaga → Curaja and reasonably guess at Latin. The Japanese is simpler and much more regular. The base spell takes no suffix, the second tier takes ラ (ra), the third takes ガ (ga), and the fourth takes ジャ (ja). One rule, every element.

TierSuffixCure lineFire lineEnglish
1—ケアル (kearu)ファイア (faia)Cure / Fire
2ラケアルラ (kearura)ファイラ (faira)Cura / Fira
3ガケアルガ (kearuga)ファイガ (faiga)Curaga / Firaga
4ジャケアルジャ (kearuja)—Curaja

Look at the Fire line and you can see what the English localisation had to do. ファイア + ラ would give “Fire-ra”, so the translators contracted it into “Fira”, and ファイガ became “Firaga” by keeping the whole stem. The Japanese never contracts: it is always the base word plus one clean syllable. Once a learner sees that, they have met one of the most productive habits in the language — Japanese builds by attaching, not by changing the middle of a word.

This is also a first lesson in the katakana long vowel. The ー in ケアル does not appear, but it dominates the character names below: it is not a dash, it is a full beat of length, and getting it wrong changes the word.

The nine FFVII heroes in Japanese

These are the party members as written in Japanese, in the order they join.

    EnglishJapaneseRōmajiWhat the katakana is doing
Cloud Strifeクラウド・ストライフKuraudo SutoraifuEvery consonant gets a vowel: st becomes su-to
Barret Wallaceバレット・ウォーレスBaretto Wōresuウォ is a built combination for wo; ッ doubles the t
Tifa Lockhartティファ・ロックハートTifa Rokkuhātoティ is テ + small ィ — Japanese has no native ti
Aerith Gainsboroughエアリス・ゲインズブールEarisu Geinzubūruス covers both s and th — see below
Red XIII / NanakiナナキNanakiReads like 七 (nana, seven) — thirteen in his own tongue
Yuffie Kisaragiユフィ・キサラギYufi Kisaragiフィ is フ + small ィ; kisaragi is a real old Japanese word
Cait Sithケット・シーKetto ShīFrom Scottish folklore, not Japanese
Vincent Valentineヴィンセント・ヴァレンタインVinsento Varentainヴ is a modern invention for v
Cid Highwindシド・ハイウインドShido Haiuindoシ is shi, so “Cid” lands as Shido

Why “Aeris” and “Aerith” were both right

The Japanese is エアリス, ending in ス (su). Japanese has no th sound, so ス is the standard katakana for English th as well as s — Smith becomes スミス. That single character can therefore be read back into English as either “Aeris” or “Aerith”, which is why the 1997 translation chose one and later official material settled on the other. Nothing changed in Japanese; it was always エアリス.

The ・ that everyone leaves out

That small raised dot between the names — クラウド・ストライフ — is called 中黒 (nakaguro). Japanese does not use a space between a foreign first name and family name; it uses this dot. A learner writing their own name in katakana should use it too: MARIA GARCIA is マリア・ガルシア, not マリア ガルシア.

ヴァレンタイン and バレンタイン are the same English word

Vincent’s surname is ヴァレンタイン, but Valentine’s Day in Japan is バレンタインデー with a plain バ. Both spell “Valentine”. ヴ was created to represent a true v, and it appears in careful writing and in names where the author wants the foreign sound preserved; everyday Japanese usually flattens v to a b sound. So the game is using the more precise spelling and the calendar is using the ordinary one. If a learner has a v in their name, either spelling is defensible — ヴ looks more exact, バ line is easier for people to read aloud.

Chocobo and Moogle are both jokes

モーグリ (mōguri) is a blend of 土竜 (mogura, mole) and 蝙蝠 (kōmori, bat) — a mole crossed with a bat, which is what the creature is. Localised as “Moogle”, the pun disappears completely.

チョコボ (chokobo) comes from チョコボール (Chokobōru), a Morinaga chocolate-ball sweet whose mascot is a bird. To a Japanese child the name is instantly a snack reference; to an English-speaking player it is simply the name of a big yellow bird.

    JapaneseRōmajiMeaningUse it?
    土竜moguramole◎ Ordinary animal word
    蝙蝠kōmoribat◎ Ordinary animal word
    魔法mahōmagic◎ Everyday noun
魔道士madōshimage, sorcerer△ Fantasy register — 白魔道士 and 黒魔道士 follow the same pattern as 時魔道士 (time mage)
召喚shōkansummoning△ Real word, used for summonses and formal calls
竜ryūdragon◎ Common kanji, also in 土竜
    ケアルkearuCure✗ Game vocabulary only
    チョコボchokoboChocobo✗ Game vocabulary only

Notice 土竜 in that list. It is written with the kanji for earth and dragon, and it means mole — a small mammal. Japanese is full of these: the characters give you an image, not a definition, and the reading (mogura) has nothing to do with either kanji’s usual sound. It is the same habit you meet in Ghibli’s 火垂る for firefly.

Where the practice has to happen

A child who plays Final Fantasy in Japanese picks up katakana quickly, because the menus force them to read it under time pressure. What the game cannot give them is everything outside the menu: how to ask a question, how to disagree politely, how to say something no script has written for them.

At TOMODACHI JAPAN, small groups of children learn with qualified teachers who currently work in Japanese schools, alongside peers their own age in Japan. Games are often what brings a child in. The teacher’s job is to take the katakana they already read fluently and turn it into conversation.

    Frequently asked questions

What is Cloud’s name in Japanese?

クラウド・ストライフ (Kuraudo Sutoraifu). It is the English name written in katakana, not a translation — Japanese did not turn “Cloud” into 雲 (kumo). Foreign character names are almost always transliterated rather than translated.

Why does Curaga sound nothing like Cure?

Because the English is a contraction of the Japanese. ケアル + ガ is kearu-ga, and the localisation compressed it to Curaga. In Japanese the relationship between the tiers is completely transparent; in English it looks like an unrelated word.

    Is katakana harder than hiragana?

It has the same number of characters and the same sounds, but it is used for foreign words, so learners meet unfamiliar spellings like ティ, フィ and ヴ straight away. Game menus are unusually good practice precisely because they are almost all katakana.

Can I write my own name the way Final Fantasy writes Cloud?

Yes, and it is one of the best first exercises there is: sound out your name syllable by syllable, add a vowel after any stranded consonant, and join first and family name with ・. We have a full walkthrough in how to write your name in Japanese katakana.

Can a child actually learn Japanese from games?

They can learn to read, and reading is the slowest part to start. What games do not build is production — speaking and being understood — because nothing in a game ever asks the player a question and waits for an answer.

More in this series: learning Japanese with The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon names in Japanese, and writing your name in katakana.
