Ghibli Movie Titles in Japanese: 16 Films, Kanji Explained

Ghibli movie titles in Japanese - all 16 films with kanji explained

The English title Spirited Away tells you what happens. The Japanese title, 千と千尋の神隠し, tells you what it costs: a girl named 千尋 has her name cut down to 千, and the film is about getting it back. That is in the title, and the English loses it. I am a Japanese teacher, and here are the Ghibli movie titles in Japanese — all sixteen features, with rōmaji, the literal reading, and the kanji underneath.

Can-you-use-it legend: ◎ = safe in real conversation · △ = fine in a film title, odd in life · ✗ = archaic or written-only.

の is the most important word in this list

Eleven of the sixteen titles contain の (no), and two of them contain it twice. It is a single hiragana character, and it does the job that English needs “of”, “’s”, and sometimes a whole relative clause to do.

The rule is short: A の B means “the B of A”, and A always comes first. English runs the other way round, which is why beginners reverse it. 魔女の宅急便 is witch → の → delivery service, so the delivery service belongs to the witch. If you said 宅急便の魔女 you would have “the witch of the delivery service”, which is a different film.

崖の上のポニョ stacks two of them and shows how the chain builds: 崖 (cliff) → の → 上 (top) gives you “the top of the cliff”, and then → の → ポニョ hangs Ponyo off that. Read it right to left and it comes out as English: Ponyo, of the top, of the cliff.

    Five titles that hide something

千と千尋の神隠し — the plot is in the title

The heroine is 荻野千尋 (Ogino Chihiro). Yubaba takes her contract and strikes out every character but the first, leaving 千 (Sen) — the same kanji, read a different way. So the title lists two people, 千 and 千尋, who are one girl before and after she loses her name. 神隠し (kamikakushi) is a real folk word: 神 god plus 隠し hiding, used for children who vanish and are said to have been taken by spirits.

The kanji 千 means “thousand” and is read sen on its own but chi inside 千尋. That is not a trick; it is the ordinary on-reading and kun-reading split that every Japanese child learns in year one.

もののけ姫 — Mononoke is not her name

English audiences reasonably assume the princess is called Mononoke. She is called San. もののけ is a common noun for a vengeful spirit or supernatural thing, so the title means “the spirit princess” — a description, not a name. The word is old enough that Japanese viewers hear it as slightly archaic too.

魔女の宅急便 — a brand name in the title

宅急便 (takkyūbin) is not the generic word for home delivery. It is Yamato Transport’s registered trademark, the Kuroneko Takkyūbin with the black-cat logo. The generic term is 宅配便 (takuhaibin). If you order a parcel in Japan, 宅配便 is the word you want — using 宅急便 is like saying “Sellotape” for sticky tape.

A parent and child at a kitchen table copying Japanese characters onto squared practice paper with a pencil

    耳をすませば — a title that stops mid-sentence

ば is the conditional ending: “if you do X”. So the title means “if you strain your ears …” and then simply stops, leaving the listener to finish it. Japanese titles do this often; English ones almost never, which is why it became Whisper of the Heart. The verb すます (sumasu) means to make something clear or still, so 耳をすませば is closer to “if you still your ears”.

火垂るの墓 — kanji chosen for the picture, not the reading

The ordinary way to write hotaru (firefly) is 蛍. This film writes it 火垂る — 火 fire plus 垂る to hang down or drip — so the characters read as “dripping fire”. Choosing kanji for their meaning rather than the standard spelling is called ateji, and it works the way an English writer might spell a word oddly for effect. A note for parents: this one is a war film about two children, and it is not a first Ghibli film for a young child.

Which of these can your child actually say?

    From the titlesRōmajiMeaningUse it?
となりtonarinext door, next to◎ となりの人 = the person next to me
天空tenkūthe sky, the heavens△ Poetic. The everyday word is 空 (sora)

風立ちぬkaze tachinuthe wind has risen✗ ぬ is classical grammar, not modern
君たちkimitachiyou (plural)△ 君 is casual and can sound talking-down

The two ✗ rows are worth pausing on. 風立ちぬ ends in ぬ, a classical auxiliary that looks like a negative to a learner but here marks completion — it is Japanese from roughly a century ago, quoted from a Hori Tatsuo novel. A learner who copies it into a sentence will produce something no living person says. That is the standard risk with learning from titles: they are written to be memorable, not ordinary.

Where the practice has to happen

A child can learn all sixteen titles in an afternoon. What they cannot get from a list is the part that matters — that の comes out automatically when they want to say “my friend’s house”, or that 紅 would sound strange used about a red bicycle.

At TOMODACHI JAPAN, small groups of children learn with qualified teachers who currently work in Japanese schools, alongside peers their own age in Japan. A good number of our families arrive through Ghibli, because it is often the first Japanese a child chooses for themselves. The teacher’s job is to get them from reading a title to saying a sentence of their own.

    Frequently asked questions

What is Spirited Away called in Japanese?

千と千尋の神隠し (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi), literally “Sen and Chihiro’s spiriting-away”. The two names are the same girl before and after the witch Yubaba takes most of her name away.

    Is “Ghibli” a Japanese word?

No. It is Italian, from an aircraft name, and in Japanese it is written in katakana as ジブリ (jiburi) because katakana is the script Japanese uses for foreign words. Japanese speakers say jiburi, not giburi.

Why do so many Ghibli titles contain の?

Because の is how Japanese links two nouns, and the classic Ghibli title shape is “[place or owner] の [character]” — the valley’s Nausicaä, the cliff-top’s Ponyo, the witch’s delivery service. Eleven of the sixteen features use it.

Which Ghibli film is best for a child learning Japanese?

となりのトトロ (My Neighbor Totoro). The speakers are small children, the sentences are short, the vocabulary is household, and the politeness level is the plain speech a child would actually use with friends. Princess Mononoke and The Wind Rises are the opposite — adult, archaic and heavily literary.

Should we watch in Japanese with subtitles, or dubbed?

Japanese audio with English subtitles, if the child will tolerate it. The English dubs are well made, but they rewrite lines to fit mouth movements, so what is said and what is written stop matching — and that pairing is exactly what a learner needs.
