Naruto Jutsu Names in Japanese: 12 Kanji Explained

Naruto’s jutsu names are not gibberish. Almost every one is built from ordinary kanji using a naming system so consistent that once you learn it, you can read a technique you’ve never seen and guess what it does. I’m a Japanese teacher, and this is what Naruto’s jutsu names mean in Japanese — the kanji, the readings, the naming grammar, and the one character that reveals where ninjutsu names came from in the first place.

Can-you-use-it legend: ◎ = ordinary Japanese you’ll meet again · △ = specialised but real · ✗ = fiction only.

遁 — the character that explains everything

Every elemental release ends in 遁: 火遁, 水遁, 雷遁, 土遁, 風遁. English subtitles render it “Release,” which sounds like emitting something. The kanji says the opposite.

遁 means to flee, to escape, to withdraw. It appears in the ordinary word 遁走 (tonsō, “flight, absconding”). So 火遁 reads literally as “fire escape” — and that is not a mistranslation, it’s the actual history. Classical ninjutsu manuals describe 遁術 (tonjutsu), the arts of escape: techniques for using fire, water, smoke or terrain to break contact and get away. A real ninja’s fire technique was for covering a retreat, not for launching a fireball.

Teacher’s note — the five elements aren’t Japanese in origin: 火水雷土風 map onto the Chinese five-phase system (五行, gogyō) that Japan imported along with the writing system. The same set organises traditional medicine, the days of the week and old calendars. Learn these five kanji and you have five of the most common characters in the language: 火曜日 is Tuesday, 水曜日 is Wednesday, 土曜日 is Saturday.

口寄せ is a real word, and it’s darker than you think

口寄せ (kuchiyose) is not invented. It’s the traditional Japanese term for spirit channelling — the practice of a medium letting a dead person’s voice speak through their mouth. In northern Japan, blind female mediums called イタコ (itako) still perform 口寄せ at Mount Osore, calling the voices of the dead for grieving families.

The kanji: 口 (kuchi, mouth) + 寄せ (yose, drawing something near, from 寄せる). Literally “mouth-drawing-near.” So when a character bites their thumb and summons a giant toad, the technique’s name is borrowed from a genuine folk-religious practice about summoning the dead. Nothing in the English “Summoning Jutsu” carries that.

The naming grammar you can reuse

Almost every technique follows one of two patterns. Learn them and the names stop being noise.

    PatternShapeExample
    Element + technique[遁] ・ [描写] の術火遁・豪火球の術
    Description + の術[noun] の術影分身の術
    Bare compound[kanji][kanji][kanji]螺旋丸, 千鳥

That の is the same linking particle that holds together 鬼滅の刃 and 進撃の巨人 — it joins two nouns and lets the reader infer the relationship. 術 (jutsu) means technique or art, and it’s a completely ordinary word: 手術 (shujutsu) is surgery, 美術 (bijutsu) is fine art, 技術 (gijutsu) is technology.

Teacher’s note — 丸 in 螺旋丸 is a naming suffix: 丸 means “round,” but on the end of a name it’s a historical marker. Japanese ships are named this way — 日本丸 — and so were boys in the samurai era: 牛若丸 (Ushiwakamaru), the childhood name of Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Attaching 丸 to 螺旋 makes “spiral” sound like a proper name rather than a description. Small choice, big effect.

What you actually get out of this

Count what a fan picks up from this one page: the five elements (which are also five weekdays), 術 as in surgery and technology, 分身 and 真似 and 多重 as ordinary words, の as the workhorse particle, and the on’yomi/kun’yomi split running underneath all of it.

That’s not a novelty lesson. It’s genuine foundation vocabulary that happens to have arrived attached to something the learner already cares about — which, in my experience, is the difference between kanji that sticks and kanji that evaporates by Thursday.

    Frequently asked questions

What does 螺旋丸 (Rasengan) mean in Japanese?

“Spiral sphere.” 螺旋 (rasen) is a real word for a spiral or helix — it’s what you’d call a spiral staircase or a screw thread. 丸 (gan here, maru alone) means round, and on the end of a name it acts as a traditional naming suffix, the way Japanese ships and samurai-era boys’ names use it.

Why does 遁 mean “release” in the subtitles?

It doesn’t, really. 遁 means “to flee or escape,” as in 遁走 (tonsō, absconding). The names come from classical 遁術 (tonjutsu) — real ninja arts of escape using fire, water or smoke to break away from pursuers. “Release” is a translator’s choice that sounds better in English than “fire escape technique.”

Is 口寄せ a real Japanese word?

Yes — it’s the traditional term for spirit channelling, where a medium lets a dead person speak through their mouth. Blind mediums called itako still perform it in northern Japan. Literally 口 (mouth) + 寄せ (drawing near).

What does 写輪眼 (Sharingan) literally mean?

写 (copy) + 輪 (wheel or ring) + 眼 (eye) — “copy wheel eye,” which describes both its ability and the ring pattern in the iris. The upgraded 万華鏡写輪眼 prefixes 万華鏡 (mangekyō), the everyday Japanese word for a kaleidoscope.

How does my child learn kanji this way properly?

By component and reading, the way it’s taught in Japanese schools — starting from words they already care about. TOMODACHI JAPAN runs small online classes with qualified Japanese teachers and peers in Japan. See our plans and pricing, or read our Naruto famous lines guide and what “dattebayo” means.
