From Goku’s cheerful “Ossu! Ora Goku!” to Vegeta’s proud speeches, Dragon Ball gave the world some of anime’s most quoted lines. But could you actually say them to a real Japanese person — and would you sound friendly, or like a Saiyan picking a fight? I’m a Japanese teacher, and in this guide we’ll go through the most iconic Dragon Ball quotes in Japanese with accurate original text, rōmaji and English — plus what each line teaches you about grammar, politeness, and which ones are safe in real life.

Goku: the cheerful hero’s most famous lines

Teacher’s note — Goku’s accent: Goku talks like a cheerful country boy. オラ (ora) is a rural, rough “I,” おめえ (omee) is a slurred “you,” and endings like 強えな (tsuee na) and なりてぇ (naritē) squash the vowels of 強いな and なりたい. It’s warm and funny in the anime, but on you it would sound like an exaggerated impression. The grammar underneath is pure gold, though: 強くなりたい (tsuyoku naritai) = “want to become strong” — the essential [adjective]く + なる (“become ~”) plus ~たい (“want to”). Cleaned up: もっと強くなりたいです.
The famous shout: かめはめ波 (kamehameha) is a made-up move name — fun to yell with friends, but not something you “use” in conversation. Fun fact for learners: 波 (ha/nami) genuinely means “wave,” so the name literally ends in “…wave.”

Teacher’s note — the little word の: Vegeta’s サイヤ人の王子 (Saiya-jin no ōji), “prince of the Saiyans,” shows の (no), the possessive/linking particle you’ll use in nearly every sentence: 私の本 (“my book”), 日本の文化 (“Japanese culture”). And ホンモノ (honmono), “the real thing / genuine,” is a crisp, grown-up word worth stealing: ホンモノの日本語 (“real Japanese”). Both are ◎ — even if declaring yourself a Saiyan prince is not.
The famous number: Frieza’s 戦闘力は53万です (sentōryoku wa gojūsan-man desu) is a perfect excuse to practise big numbers. 万 (man) = 10,000, so 53万 is “53 × 10,000” = 530,000. Japanese counts in units of ten-thousand, which trips up every learner — Dragon Ball makes great flashcards for it. (And yes: the English dub’s “over 9000” was a famous mistranslation of the original 8,000.)
Anime Dragon Ball Japanese vs. real Japanese
Dragon Ball’s charm is its characterful speech: Goku’s country slur, Vegeta’s proud おれ, slurred endings like なりてぇ and 終わらん. That colour is what makes each character instantly recognisable — and exactly why copying it makes you sound like you’re doing a voice. But the grammar underneath is 100% real and useful: ~たい, ~く なる, の, ホンモノ, です, 万 counting. Learn the clean version, then dial the “roughness” up or down depending on who you’re talking to. That’s the whole trick to turning anime Japanese into Japanese you can actually use.
The fastest way to feel it? Say もっと強くなりてぇ to a Japanese friend, then もっと強くなりたいです. One gets a grin (“nice Goku!”), the other gets a natural reply — and you’ll never forget the difference.
Frequently asked questions
What does “Ossu Ora Goku” mean?
オッス！オラ悟空！(Ossu! Ora Gokū!) means “Hey! I’m Goku!” オッス (ossu) is a rough, energetic greeting (think “yo!”), and オラ (ora) is Goku’s rural, casual word for “I.” Charming from Goku, but too rough for polite introductions — use 私は〜です for that.
Is Dragon Ball good for learning Japanese?

Can I say “omee” like Goku?
Better not. おめえ (omee) is a rough, slurred “you” that sounds confrontational to most people. Use the person’s name + さん, or あなた (anata) in a pinch. This is exactly the nuance a native teacher helps you feel naturally.
