Killua quotes in Japanese - two best friends walking a country road

Killua Zoldyck was raised to be an assassin, yet almost every line fans remember him for is about friendship. That contrast makes his Japanese surprisingly useful: he talks like a real twelve-year-old boy, full of contractions, dropped particles and little sentence endings that textbooks skip. I teach Japanese, and below are ten of the best-known Killua quotes in Japanese from Hunter x Hunter, in the original Japanese, with rōmaji, a translation, and the grammar underneath — plus an honest note on which ones a real person could say, and which belong only to a boy with lightning in his hands.

Can-you-use-it legend: ◎ = safe in real conversation · △ = fine in anime, odd in life · ✗ = don’t say this to a person.

    The grammar underneath each line

クセになってんだ — how ている shrinks to てん

Senritsu notices that Killua’s footsteps make almost no sound, and he shrugs: クセになってんだ 音殺して動くの. It is probably the most quoted piece of Killua dialogue in Japanese, and it is a masterclass in casual speech. Start with the full, polite version: 癖になっているんです (“it has become a habit”). Now watch it shrink. なっている loses its い and becomes なってる. The explanatory の turns into ん, and なってるん squashes again into なってん. Add plain だ, and you get なってんだ.

The second half is back to front. The usual word sequence would be 音を殺して動くのが癖になっている. Killua says the conclusion first and adds the explanation afterwards, the same way English speakers add “…moving quietly, I mean.” He also drops the を after 音. Spoken Japanese drops を all the time: ご飯食べた? (“did you eat?”) is how friends actually ask. 音を殺す itself is an idiom — literally “to strangle the sound,” meaning to move silently. You will also hear 息を殺す, “to hold your breath.” Kanji note: the manga writes クセ in katakana, which gives the word a light, throwaway feel.

友達(ツレ)が友達(ツレ)助けるのは当然だろ — reading the furigana trick

This line, said to Ikalgo in the Chimera Ant arc, topped a fan ranking of Killua’s best lines. Look closely at the manga: the kanji say 友達 (“friend”), but the small reading printed beside them says ツレ, a rough slang word for a buddy. Manga artists use this trick all the time. The kanji tell you the meaning; the furigana tell you the sound the character actually makes. It is one of the best reasons to read manga in Japanese — you get two layers of information at once.

The grammar is simple and very reusable. 友達が友達を助ける (“a friend helps a friend”) becomes a noun with の: 助けるのは, “helping is…”. After that comes 当然だろ, “obviously, right?” You can build your own: 宿題をするのは当然だ (“doing homework is a given”), 日本語を話すのは楽しい (“speaking Japanese is fun”). In real life, say 友達, not ツレ, unless you are with close friends who talk that way.

    ゴンと…友達になりたい — the たい form

During the Hunter Exam, Illumi asks his little brother what he really wants, and Killua can barely get the words out. The line is quiet, but grammatically it is the most useful sentence on this page, because it combines three beginner patterns at once:

    PieceBuilt fromMeaning
ゴンとname + とwith Gon — と marks the partner
友達にnoun + にinto friends — に marks what you become
    なるdictionary formto become
なりたいstem なり + たいwant to become — the “I want to” ending

Teacher’s note: a child who learns only this one line can already say 〇〇さんと友達になりたいです — “I want to be friends with (name).” Swap the verb stem and たい works with anything: 日本に行きたい (“I want to go to Japan”), ラーメンを食べたい (“I want to eat ramen”). The pause (…) matters too. In Japanese, hesitating before the important word is how people show that something is hard to say.

だって友達だもん — giving reasons like a kid

Fighting against the needle Illumi planted in his head, Killua repeats だって 友達だもん オレの大事な 友達だもん. Two small words carry the whole emotion. だって at the start means “but” or “because,” used to defend yourself. もん at the end is a shortened もの, and it turns a statement into a stubborn, slightly childish reason: “because he is, OK?”

Japanese children say this every day: だって眠いんだもん (“but I’m sleepy!”), だって好きだもん (“because I like it!”). It is perfectly natural among friends and family, and it sounds cute from a young learner. Adults at work would never use it. Notice also 大事な友達, “precious friend” — 大事 is a な-adjective, so it needs な before a noun.

A boy sitting on a park bench with his skateboard, reading his notebook

自分の将来は自分で決める — 自分 and the particle で

Killua says this about breaking free from his family’s plans for him, and it is the one line on this page that works almost unchanged in a school essay. 自分 (“oneself”) appears twice with two different jobs. 自分の将来 is “my own future,” with の showing possession. 自分で決める is “decide by myself,” with で marking the means — the same で as in バスで行く, “go by bus.”

The verb 決める stays in the plain present, which in Japanese also covers the future: “I will decide.” Japanese has no separate future tense, so 明日行く simply means “I’ll go tomorrow.” For a polite version, 自分の将来は自分で決めます is ideal for a speech or a class presentation.

命を賭けること — turning verbs into nouns with こと

Speaking to Ikalgo, Killua draws a sharp line: 命を賭けること と 命を軽く扱うこと are “similar-looking” (似てるようで) but 全然違う. The key is こと, which turns a whole verb phrase into a noun: 命を賭ける (“to risk your life”) → 命を賭けること (“risking your life”). Once both actions are nouns, と can link them like “A and B.”

似てるようで is also worth stealing: ようで means “it seems… but.” 簡単なようで難しい (“it looks easy but it’s hard”) is something students say about kanji all the time. And 全然違う, “totally different,” is everyday Japanese you will hear in every classroom.

傍にいていいかな — asking permission with ていい

In his thoughts about Gon during the Chimera Ant arc, Killua calls him 光, “light,” before asking 傍にいていいかな…? The pattern is て-form + いい, “is it OK to…?” The full textbook form is 〜てもいい; casual speech drops the も. かな at the end adds “I wonder,” which makes the question soft and unsure.

Kids use this pattern constantly: 入っていい? (“can I come in?”), これ使っていいかな? (“I wonder if I can use this?”), 隣に座ってもいいですか (“may I sit next to you?”). One more small point: 見れない is the spoken form of 見られない (“can’t look”). Teachers mark it wrong in essays, but almost every young Japanese speaker says 見れる.

Is Killua good for learning Japanese?

Better than most action heroes. Killua speaks like a real boy his age: casual, full of てる and んだ contractions, with オレ for “I” and お前 for “you.” That makes him a great model for how young people actually talk, and his friendship lines use the most useful beginner patterns in the language. The rough edges are the pronouns and the fighting lines — お前 aimed at a new classmate sounds cold, and 返り討ちにしてやる is a threat, full stop.

So keep the pattern and change the clothes: お前にあえて本当によかった becomes 〇〇さんに会えて本当によかったです, and 友達(ツレ) becomes plain 友達. The fastest way to learn which version fits which person is to try them on people your own age — a real friend’s smile, or confused face, teaches you in one second what no quote list can.

Keep going with the same method: our Hunter x Hunter quotes in Japanese guide covers Gon, Hisoka plus the other main characters, and Killua’s オレ is compared with 僕 and 私 in Ore vs Boku vs Watashi. FAQ

What is Killua’s most famous quote in Japanese?

Two lines compete. クセになってんだ 音殺して動くの (Kuse ni natten da. Oto koroshite ugoku no) — “It’s a habit, moving without a sound” — is the one fans quote as a joke. 友達(ツレ)が友達(ツレ)助けるのは当然だろ, “of course a friend helps a friend,” took first place in a Japanese fan ranking and sums up who Killua becomes.

What does “kuse ni natten da” mean?

It means “it’s become a habit.” 癖 (kuse) is “habit,” になる is “to become,” and なってんだ is a heavily shortened なっているんだ. You can use it about harmless habits too: 毎朝走るのがクセになってる, “running every morning has become a habit.”

Why does Killua call Gon お前?

お前 (omae) is a blunt, casual “you” that boys use with close friends. For Killua and Gon it shows closeness, not rudeness. With someone you don’t know well, it sounds harsh, so use the person’s name with さん or くん instead.

Can I learn Japanese just by watching Hunter x Hunter?

You can pick up vocabulary, rhythm and a lot of casual grammar, especially with Japanese subtitles on. What anime can’t give you is feedback. Speaking skills come from saying sentences to real people and noticing how they react.

My child loves Hunter x Hunter. How do they practise with real Japanese speakers?
